Introducing Windows Server 2008

book cover

With technical insights direct from the Windows Server team, this practical introduction delivers real-world implementation scenarios and pragmatic advice for administering Windows Server in the enterprise.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of Windows Server 2008 at the Beta 3 milestone. Because Beta 3 is a pre-release version of the platform, some features will likely change before release to manufacturing (RTM) occurs. So the descriptions of these features in this book might not be completely accurate. However, please be assured that the author, working together with the Windows Server 2008 product team at Microsoft, has tried very hard to ensure that the information presented in this book will still be as accurate as possible even after RTM.

The target audience for this book is IT professionals who plan on deploying Windows Server 2008 in enterprise environments, and who might therefore be testing pre-release versions of Windows Server 2008 prior to rolling it out on their production networks. The book will be distributed widely at TechEd 2007 and other Microsoft events, but it will also be available through the usual commercial channels (bookstores) for IT pros who can’t make these events and who therefore might want to purchase it.

This latest version of Special Edition Using Linux shows how to install, configure, use, and network the latest generation of freeware Linux operating systems. The authors focus mostly on the freeware version of Red Hat Linux 5.1, though Caldera OpenLinux 1.2 and other popular distributions also receive attention. The book includes lots of information on how to successfully accessorize Linux with various add-ons. The authors explain how to install and use XFree 86, the popular X Windows system. They also show what you can do with various utilities.

Using Linux offers excellent coverage of networking matters. Not only do Tackett and Burnett do a great job of showing how to get the Apache Web server running under Linux, they show how to configure TCP/IP and set up a Domain Name Service (DNS). Some fluff--"how to surf the Web" material--inevitably sneaks in, but it doesn't detract much from this otherwise solid book.

The disks that come with this book contain the freeware versions of Red Hat Linux 5.1 and Caldera OpenLinux 1.2--two of the best distributions around. There's also a copy of StarOffice 4 in the sleeve, making Using Linux a complete Linux solution.
