HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition

HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition
By Ed Tittel , Mary Burmeister Hard core programmers would say that HTML is for dummies. Even so, for those of us who want to build and maintain our own Web sites, but cringe at the sight of anything resembling a programming language, HTML 4 for Dummies is the hand-holding guide to help us through those processes. Because many HTML editors do all the site-building work for you, it's strange the authors chose to wait until appendix C in the back of the book to explain why you must know HTML. Still, their reasons for learning HTML are sound, and the advice they dispense is solid. Beyond going through the ins and outs of HTML tags, the book does a fine job of explaining what design elements work and how to avoid common mistakes. The section on XHTML ensures that budding site builders have all the latest tools at their disposal. Whether your goal is to build a simple, text-oriented Web site or one loaded with frames, graphics, and animation, HTML 4 for Dummies will put you on the right track. Visual Basic 2005 With .NET 3.0 Programmers Reference (with source code)

book cover

With this completely up-to-date tutorial and reference, you’ll quickly learn how to develop Visual Basic (VB) programs that leverage the latest features of Vista and .NET 3.0. The tutorial section walks you through VB.NET from scratch, providing you with in-depth descriptions of the development environment, basic program syntax, and standard controls. You’ll also explore the fundamental concepts in object-oriented programming with VB.

In the comprehensive reference section, you’ll find out how to take advantage of specific VB features. Expert Rod Stephens shows you how to draw images, use GDI+ routines, and generate printed output. You’ll also discover how to build an application that interacts with its environment, save and load data in external sources, and use standard dialog controls. This approach makes it easier than ever to learn this powerful language and create your own dynamic programs.

This book is intended for programmers of all levels. It describes the Visual Basic .NET language from scratch, so you don’t need experience with previous versions of the language. The book also covers many intermediate and advanced topics. It covers topics in enough depth that even experienced developers will discover new tips, tricks, and language details. After you have mastered the language, you may still find useful tidbits throughout the book, and the reference appendixes will help you look up easily forgotten details.

The chapters move quickly through the more introductory material. If you have never programmed before and are intimidated by computers, then you might want to read a more introductory book first. If you are a beginner who’s not afraid of the computer, then you should have few problems learning Visual Basic .NET from this book.

If you have programmed in any other language, then fundamentals such as variable declarations, data types, and arrays should be familiar to you, so you should have no problem with this book. The index and reference appendices should be particularly useful in helping you translate from the languages you already know into the corresponding Visual Basic syntax.

IP Network Design Guide

book cover
This redbook identifies some of the basic design aspects of IP networks and explains how to deal with them when implementing new IP networks or redesigning existing IP networks. This project focuses on internetwork and transport layer issues such as address and name management, routing, network management, security, load balancing and performance, design impacts of the underlying networking hardware, remote access, quality of service, and platform-specific issues. Application design aspects, such as e-mail, gateways, Web integration, etc., are discussed briefly where they influence the design of an IP network.

After a general discussion of the aforementioned design areas, this redbook provides three examples for IP network design, depicting a small, medium and large network. You are taken through the steps of the design and the reasoning as to why things are shown one way instead of another. Of course, every network is different and therefore these examples are not intended to generalize. Their main purpose is to illustrate a systematic approach to an IP network design given a specific set of requirements, expectations, technologies and budgets.

This redbook will help you design, create or change IP networks implementing the basic logical infrastructures required for a successful operation of such networks. This book does not describe how to deploy corporate applications such as e-mail, e-commerce, Web server or distributed databases, just to name a few.

Service-Oriented Java Business Integration

The book first discusses the various integration approaches available and introduces the Enterprise Service Bus, which is a new Architectural pattern that can facilitate integrating services. ESB provides different forms of mediation services including routing and transformation. Java Business Integration (JBI) provides a collaboration framework that provides standard interfaces for integration components and protocols to plug into, thus allowing the assembly of Service-Oriented Integration (SOI) frameworks following the ESB pattern. JBI is based on JSR 208, which is an extension of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Once JBI and ESB are introduced, we look at how we have been doing service integration without either of these using traditional J2EE. The book then slowly introduces ESB and, with the help of code, showcases how easily things can be done using JBI.Download Here

Securing Windows Server 2008: Prevent Attacks from Outside and Inside Your Organization

Microsoft hails the latest version of its flagship server operating system, Windows Server 2008, as “the most secure Windows Server ever”. However, to fully achieve this lofty status, system administrators and security professionals must install, configure, monitor, log, and troubleshoot a dizzying array of new features and tools designed to keep the bad guys out and maintain the integrity of their network servers. This is no small task considering the market saturation of Windows Server and the rate at which it is attacked by malicious hackers. According to IDC, Windows Server runs 38% of all network servers. This market prominence also places Windows Server at the top of the SANS top 20 Security Attach Targets. The first five attack targets listed in the SANS top 20 for operating systems are related to Windows Server. This doesn’t mean that Windows is inherently less secure than other operating systems; it’s simply a numbers game. More machines running Windows Server. More targets for attackers to hack.
As a result of being at the top of the “most used” and “most hacked” lists, Microsoft has released a truly powerful suite of security tools for system administrators to deploy with Windows Server 2008. This book is the comprehensive guide needed by system administrators and security professionals to master seemingly overwhelming arsenal of new security tools including:
1. Network Access Protection, which gives administrators the power to isolate computers that don’t comply with established security policies. The ability to enforce security requirements is a powerful means of protecting the network.
2. Enhanced solutions for intelligent rules and policies creation to increase control and protection over networking functions, allowing administrators to have a policy-driven network.
3. Protection of data to ensure it can only be accessed by users with the correct security context, and to make it available when hardware failures occur.
4. Protection against malicious software with User Account Control with a new authentication architecture.
5. Increased control over your user settings with Expanded Group Policy.
…to name just a handful of the new security features. In short, Windows Server 2008 contains by far the most powerful and complex suite of security tools ever released in a Microsoft Server product. Securing Windows Server 2008 provides system administrators and security professionals with the knowledge they need to harness this power.

Beginning Ubuntu Linux 2nd Edition

coverBeginning Ubuntu Linux, Second Edition purely and simply focuses on what you need to know to use Linux. It’s concise and to the point, aiming to re-create under Linux all the stuff you used to do under Windows, or even Apple Macintosh. But don’t think that this means Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Second Edition cuts corners. Wherever justified, this book spends time examining the topics you need to know in order to gain a complete and comprehensive understanding. For example, you’ll find a hefty chapter looking at the command-line prompt—arguably the heart of Linux and the element that gives Linux most of its power. There’s also an entire chapter discussing (and illustrating) how to initially install Ubuntu on your computer.

This book is split into seven parts, each of which contains chapters about a certain aspect of Ubuntu use. These parts can be read in sequence, or you can dip in and out of them at will. Whenever a technical term is mentioned, a reference is made to the chapter where that term is explained.

This second edition has been thoroughly updated and revised to take into account improvements introduced with the 6.10 release of Ubuntu (code-named Edgy Eft). The previous edition covered the 5.10 release, and the changes introduced with the 6.10 release, though often subtle, make a dramatic difference in the Ubuntu experience.
